Stuck on parameterize an inp file

 I have a big problem with parameterize inp files. Below you can see a parameterized inp file that I can run it with a subroutine easily. This is a very simple model, but I want to use the same subroutine with a very complex model. I'm wondering, how can I modify any inp file (non-parametric) generated by Abaqus in order to be compatible with the subroutine? For example, I made a very simple block and I defined that subroutine as material property, but after so many efforts I couldn't run it with the subroutine, while it works well without subroutine. You can see the mentioned model in my next post.

The parameters have nothing to do with the subroutine. They define the
geometry.
Proceed as I advised you, this is our best approach.

Hi all,
Below you can find the input file of a simple block under tension, that I mentioned in my previous post. The main problem is, I don't know how to parameterize nodes, elements and mesh sections, as I can modify or copy/paste other parts from the previous parameterized input file. Is there any way that I can parameterize this file, similar to the above input file in order to be compatible with my subroutine?
This is just a simple example and after I figure out how to do it, I'll parameterize a complex model.

I really need help for this issue and I'd be grateful if someone can help me to solve it.

As Frank has pointed out, the parameterization of an input file should not affect compatibility with user subroutines, unless your subroutines use hard-coded values that aren’t consistent with the modified values in your input file.  Note that in Abaqus 2017 parameter values can be accessed within user subroutines (see “Accessing Abaqus table collections” in the “User Subroutines” documentation).

In my opinion, parameterization is only useful for varying things like material properties and loads.  For anything but the most trivial models, it will be very difficult to parameterize the geometry since nearly every nodal coordinate will need to be defined by a parameter.  You’ll be much better off defining the model within Abaqus/CAE and making modifications there.  If you want a truly parametric model, then you’ll need to use the Python scripting interface.  This is extremely effective and flexible, but there’s a fairly significant learning curve.

Hi all,
Below you can find the input file of a simple block under tension, that I mentioned in my previous post. The main problem is, I don't know how to parameterize nodes, elements and mesh sections, as I can modify or copy/paste other parts from the previous parameterized input file. Is there any way that I can parameterize this file, similar to the above input file in order to be compatible with my subroutine?
This is just a simple example and after I figure out how to do it, I'll parameterize a complex model.

I really need help for this issue and I'd be grateful if someone can help me to solve it.

The reason that I supposed that the issue would be because of the parameters is, when I run the non-parameterized inp (second inp) file with a elastic material, it works well, but when I use the subroutine as material property, the run is completed successfully but I get this very annoying error in visualization and I cannot see results:

"The selected primary variable is not available in the current frame for any elements in the current display group".

While, when I use the parameterized inp (first inp) file and subroutine, I can see the results in the visualization. So, in both cases, the run is completed successfully, and the only problem is, I get the above error in visualization when I run the non-parameterized inp. I've tried so many ways to solve this issue, but honestly I have no idea why it happens.

How to make a rigid body deformable

Dear Community,

is there a possibility to make rigid parts deformable ?

We have a knee model. Bones are defined as rigid bodies as the model was
created with a focus on the ligaments and tendons, and now we would like
to make the bones in it deformable.

The rigid femur is defined by
*Rigid Body, ref node=_PickedSet96, elset=FEMUR-1_FEMUR, tie nset=FEMATTACH
The tibia and the patella are defined in the same style.

Not easily because IIUC the rigid body is defined by its surface, not as a
solid.
I would try to export he part as stl, then read this in in a
CAD program (FreeCad, Salome etc.) and convert it to a solid there.
Then import the part into Abaqus.

Alternatively gmsh or tetgen may be able to read the elements of the
rigid part and remesh it as a solid.

you should prepare your model via umat according your material model.

It depends on what elements are used with the element set “FEMUR-1_FEMUR”.  If they are continuum elements (or can be converted to continuum elements), then all you need to do is comment out the *Rigid Body.  But, if the element set contains rigid elements (e.g., R3D4), then the best you can do is convert it to shell elements (although you could use the orphan mesh utilitites in CAE to generate a solid mesh from the surface mesh).

I feel as if I am missing something obvious here but, in the odd chance I am not, shouldn't removing the Rigid Body constraint be sufficient to make the bones deformable?

By the way, bones are typically discretized with continuum tet/hex elements which have no rotational DOFs, which makes me think the "tie nset" is redundant.

It depends on how the model was generated.  If the model was derived from a scan, then there might just be a surface mesh defined used R3D3/R3D4 type of elements.  At best these could be converted to deformable shell elements, but that wouldn’t really be appropriate.  As mentioned in a previous post, Abaqus/CAE has the ability to generate a volume mesh from a surface mesh, so a model could be generated that way.  If, in fact, the rigid body consists of solid elements, then, as you say, simply removing the *Rigid Body definition should be sufficient.

Thanks, answers were very helpful. When I removed the "rigid body" constraints, parts changed to deformable. But another problem was appeared. At the centroid of those parts there is a reference point, and all forces, moment and rotation applied on that point.

I'm trying to connect the reference point to the deformable part, but it's tricky and the only way that I've found is the coupling constraint between nodes and reference point (tie doesn't work). The thing is, this constraint makes the model more complex.

I'm wondering, is there any other way to assign the reference point to the deformable part?
