Results in .odb and .fil file different?

Results in .odb and .fil file different?

All,

Below is quoted a part of the .inp file that was submitted to ABAQUS,
I got the results in both .odb file as well as the .fil file. I had
however not asked for any odb file since all my output commands
specify either file or print in them.

Is .odb default whether we ask for it or not? Also I converted
the .fil file to .res file for post processing in Hypermesh, the
answers that i get in HM and those that I see if i postprocess
the .odb file in ABAQUS CAE are different, which one do I believe and
why?

Yes, ODB output is active by default since this is what ABAQUS/Viewer reads.
You can suppress it using *OUTPUT.

What results are you comparing?  Node or element results?  Are they being
averaged at the nodes?  If so, how does Hypermesh do the averaging as
compared to ABAQUS/Viewer.   I'd be surprised if the results contained in
*odb and *fil are different, but depending on what you requested (I see
AVERAGED AT NODES in your input file), and how the postprocessor manipulates
things, you might see some differences.  If they are large, then most likely
you have very high gradients and need to refine the mesh.

I strongly suggest you use the odb. I always have some problems with interfaces.
If you have Hypermesh, than you also have HyperView. HV will read the odb without any transformation. The results there are the same as in the Abaqus-viewer. Almost. The viewer extrapolates the values at the integrationpoints to the nodes (which is something i hate). Then it averages these values. The altair translator hmabaqus (fil2res) averages the integrationpoint-values to an element-value. This is the only result it contains. The postprocessor smoothes these values to the nodes i.e. interpolates them onto the nodes.
Try quering the element-results in HM and ABQ-View (make sure you use the element/centroid values).
So the results are basically the same, but what the postprocessor do with them is absolutly different. I'll try to attach a pdf from altair, in which they explain what results are used in postprocessing. If it doesn't work, send me an email directly.

In any case, i agree with Dave: If the element-Values and the nodal-values differ much, you should refine your mesh. By the way, you can vizualize the discontinuities (that's what we're talking about) somewhere in Abaqus-Viewer.
